He swore on his mother’s grave, but then he swore on just about everything. They had to believe him. He had collected the parcel as they had instructed. Had carried it, hidden inside the check lumber jacket he always wore once the weather turned, all the way into town and had placed it on the ledge beside him in Gloria’s coffee shop at the corner of Jade Street. He sat there as instructed waiting for the contact to arrive.

One time years back or centuries back when dogs were not dependant on humans there were dogs who sat around doing little. Now one nite about 300 dogs were in the owners mansion after being invited by the mansion owners dog playing cards There were tables set up with drinks and food and ashtrays for those dogs who enjoyed a good cigar while doing nothing.

Bending to scoop up dog excrement from the garden I turn my head skyward at the screech of a lone, black raven.
The summer day feels like winter. The sky is dark and overcast, like my thoughts. I watch as wings flap and the bird circles round and round in the bleak sky.
“Caw. Caw. CAAAAAAAW!”
I drop the scoop, hold my hands over my ears, tear my eyes away.
Returning to the house I put things in order. Then I take off the gloves, the white overalls, the shoe covers and stuff them into a black refuse sack.
